Holywell Bay Beach

Newquay North Cornwall
Holywell Bay is situated on Cornwall's north coast, nestled between the popular resort towns of Newquay and Perranporth. The sandy beach at Holywell Bay is nearly a mile long at low tide and is popular with families with young children due to the meandering stream that leads out to the sea which is safe for children to play in.

Cross over the picture perfect wooden bridge at the bottom of the dunes at Holywell Bay, which are over 5000 years old and are the tallest in Britain, and you'll arrive at Holywell Bay beach, voted fourth favourite view by the National Trust. Holywell Bay's most prominent feature is the iconic 'Gull Rocks' or 'Carters Rock', these huge peaks provide a stunning backdrop to the beach, perhaps the reason why Holywell Bay has been used as the set for numerous films, including the James Bond movie, Die Another Day.

Holywell Bay takes its name from the holy well situated in a sea cave that can only be reached at low tide, the cave is at the north end of the beach. Mothers used to walk across the sands to the cave to take their ailing children to the well believing that the sacred water that seeps from the multi-coloured rocks would heal them.

At the southern end of Holywell Bay beach is a ship wreck that can be seen at low tide, the SS. Francia. The Francia was an Argentinean ship carrying a cargo of coal, it was wrecked in 1917 when it hit the shore it broke its back and was stranded. They managed to salvage a fair amount of the ship but the rest had to be left behind and it's sat there ever since.
