Mousehole

Mousehole Penzance West Cornwall
Mousehole, a quaint fishing village pronounced 'Mowzel', is near Newlyn and the bustling market town Penzance in West Cornwall. Mousehole is one of Cornwall's most popular destinations and was once the main port serving Mounts Bay. There are dividing opinions on where it takes its intriguing name from, some say it comes from the Cornish word 'Moeshayle' meaning at the mouth of the river of young women, but some say it comes from the literal words 'mouse hole' in reference to a huge sea cave nearby.

This small village is full of character cottages built with locally sourced granite and not a lot has changed here over the years. There are small craft shops and cafes dotted around the narrow winding lanes around the harbour, which is full of fishing boats and boasts a small, sheltered and child friendly beach which adds to the appeal as a family destination. The most popular attraction in Mousehole takes place at Christmas time when the boats in the harbour and narrow winding streets are decorated with Christmas lights, a beautiful site well worth travelling to see!

The coast line around Mousehole is dramatic, wild and rugged and there's miles of coast path to explore. St Clement's Isle is a small cluster of rocks sitting just out to sea, legend has it as the home to an ancient hermit. Tragically many lives were lost here in the Penlee disaster of 1981, when the lifeboat was lost in a particularly violent storm, there is a fitting tribute where the lifeboat was launched half way between the neighbouring village of Newlyn and Mousehole. It is reported the last person to speak the Cornish language lived here, Dolly Pentreath, who died in 1777 and there is a memorial plaque in her honour in the village.

Although there is a small car park next to the harbour, car parking in the village is extremely limited and visitors are advised to try and park on the outskirts of Mousehole and walk in.
