Porth Joke Beach

Newquay North Cornwall
Porth Joke, or 'Polly Joke' as it's known locally, is a small secluded cove tucked into a beautiful valley nestled between Crantock beach and Holywell Bay on Cornwall's north coast. The beach takes its name from the Cornish words 'Pol-Lejouack' meaning Jackdaw Cove.

Surrounded by National Trust land, Cubert Common and West Pentire headland are beautiful unspoilt natural areas, with Porth Joke beach below, an idyllic Cornish cove. The beach is sandy with some pebbles and rock pools and several caves to explore at low tide. There is a stream which meanders down the beach that has a little wooden bridge to cross the river at the top of the beach, perfect for those walking across Cubert Common headland towards Kelseys Head. The waters at Polly Joke are regularly frequented by seals and the surrounding hills are covered with beautiful wildflowers meaning the whole area is home to lots of wildlife.

One of the seasonal highlights falls in early Summer when the fields above the beach at West Pentire are covered in Wild Poppies and Corn Marigolds, a truly beautiful sight to behold. There are no facilities close to the beach, meaning that Polly Joke beach is far quieter than some of the other more popular tourist beaches nearby at Fistral beach in Newquay and Perranporth beach.

Hard, there is a fairly flat path on to the beach from the National Trust car park near Polly Joke campsite, but it takes about 5 - 10 minutes to walk. You can also park at two different car parks at West Pentire, the walk to the beach is steep and takes about 5 minutes.

National Trust car park next to Polly Joke campsite (you drive through Treago Farm Campsite in Crantock to access this) or there are two public car parks easily signposted in West Pentire.
