Although so close to the sea and popular with visitors, St Austell is not a resort town, depending very much for its welfare on the China Clay industry used in the making of paper and porcelain. In the town centre, narrow streets spread out from the Italianate market hall, built in the 1840's, a huge shopping complex was completed a few years ago making this a great place to visit for all your amenities.
The nearby Trinity Church has a carved 15th-century tower, and its central aisle was constructed in a sharp curve. In consequence, it merely has a well served railway station (on the Penzance line), shops, restaurants, Inns and a recreation centre. Of course, the main attractions of this area are the many south coast beaches and villages beside them and the choice they offer.
